Linda Locke, Lawyer
Linda has been a lawyer for 13 years and has 10 years
experience in legal practice, public legal education,
supervision and training of paralegals and support staff,
social work and law management. Linda has experienced
a five-month internship with human rights center in
Geneva working with indigenous people of the world as
part of articling. Linda served as an observer for one
month of South Africa’s first Democratic Election
after years of apartheid. Sponsor by Canadian Bar Associations,
called on November 1989. Linda currently focuses on
increasing access to justice for the residence of Northern
B.C. Her work relates to remote aboriginal communities
using: mediation, collaboration, and healing with family
and civil matters; linkage of the above matters with
the courts; community development regarding access to
justice; and seeking a more integrated approach regarding
services to the northern populations regarding psychological,
legal, social assistance and other services. Linda has
also worked as a consultant, analyst and research writer
for a variety of native communities and aboriginal organizations.
Linda was honored to receive the CBA Community Service
Award in 2003.

Anita Howard, Intake Legal
Assistant
I am from Gitsegukla Reserve and I am Gis Gaast (not
the correct spelling ) (Grouse aka: Fireweed) house
of Sko Guum La Ha (not the right spelling), my Chief
is Vernon Milton My position is Legal/Intake Assistant,
taking legal aid applications on Criminal, Family and
Poverty determining eligibility and referring appropriately.
This is my ninth year with the office. I continue to
enjoy the challenges and experience that I am gaining.
I am also pleased that we are still surviving as a Society.
I am grateful that our office is providing services
for our clients. I would like to thank the USCLAS Board
for their continuing support.

Lyn Mowatt, LIC
I belong to the House of Dawamuux of the Giskaast Clan.
I have been with the Law Office for about 19 years.
After the law office was shut down and I layed off due
to the provincial cutbacks in August 2002 I was fortunate
to work and train as Lands Manager for Gitksan Government
Commission for one year. I am now employed for at least
2 years as a legal advocate for the law office as a
result of a special funding from the Law Foundation
of British Columbia. I enjoy the work and helping people
but the objectives of the law is completely different
from the legal aid days.

Sandra Mowatt, Receptionist
My name is Sandra Mowatt; I’ve been with USCLAS
for about 2 years now. I started here as the Secretary/Receptionist,
I soon took the position of Researcher/Legal Assistant
and continued to do front desk duties. I gained a lot
of experience and training while working here at USCLAS
that is the equivalent to going to college. I was born
and raised in the Gitanmaax community under Wilps Tsa
Bax. I graduated from the Hazelton Secondary High School
where I started work experience and continued full time
since.
